Fairfax Regional and Community Newspapers placed in single management structure

Sydney, April 12, 2002  -  Mr Fred Hilmer, Chief Executive Officer of John Fairfax Holdings Limited [ASX:FXJ], announced today that Fairfax Community Newspapers (FCN) would be merged with Fairfax's regional newspapers, creating a single regional and community publications unit. Mr Brian Evans, Regional General Manager, will oversee the regional and community publications. Mr Ian Crowther, currently General Manager of FCN, will have responsibility for the direction of the southern publications - the St George and Sutherland Leader, The Illawarra Mercury, and the Wollongong and Shellharbour Advertiser - and will report to Mr Evans.

"This decision continues the efforts we have made throughout the company to run the business more efficiently, with stronger management disciplines across the group while maintaining editorial quality. Significant benefits to both the regional and suburban newspapers will be achieved, consistent with our philosophy of running growth organisations throughout Fairfax." Mr Hilmer said.

Mr Evans said, "I am looking forward to combining the strengths of Fairfax Community Newspapers and Fairfax's regional newspapers. Together we will maintain the excellence of our publications while gaining significant efficiencies throughout the group."

Fairfax's regional publications include The Newcastle Herald, The Illawarra Mercury, The Warrnambool Standard, the Central Coast Sun Weekly, and several community newspapers. Fairfax Community Newspapers consists of 30 newspapers and magazines throughout New South Wales and Victoria.
