Peter Christopher appointed Managing Editor, Illawarra Newspapers SYDNEY,
August 30, 2001
-- Mr Peter Christopher, currently the Deputy Editor-Sport, for The Sydney
Morning Herald, and Group Editor for Fairfax’s Olympics coverage
last year, has been appointed as Managing Editor of Illawarra Newspapers,
publisher of The Illawarra Mercury, effective from Monday, 10 September, 2001. Mr
Fred Hilmer, Chief Executive Officer, John Fairfax Holdings Limited, owner
of The Illawarra Mercury,
said: "Peter
Christopher is an outstanding journalist.
He made a great contribution to all our publications in leading our
coverage of the 2000 Olympics.
Peter's professional approach and dedication to his work over the
years will stand him in good stead in his new role as Managing Editor at
Illawarra.
Our assignment of a journalist of this caliber and seniority is a
reflection of our commitment to the community.
He has our full support in strengthening
The Illawarra Mercury, and his goal will be to make a fine newspaper

Christopher, who has held various management and editorial positions with The
Sun-Herald and The Sydney Morning Herald said: "The

Nick Hartgerink, previously the Editor of
The Illawarra Mercury has this week announced his retirement after 27
years of service with Illawarra Newspapers.
Mr Evans said that Nick has been an integral part to the success of
the Mercury and its associated products and is to be congratulated on his
total dedication and commitment to the staff he has worked with and the
region he has served so well.
