Mr Ronald Walker, Chairman of the Board of John Fairfax Holdings Limited, today issued the following statement on the death of Kerry Packer:

"A giant of our industry and society has passed from our midst, and we pay tribute to his memory and his family.

Kerry Packer brought to the media industry a new dimension of creativity and success. Because of his drive and determination, The Nine Network, the industry’s leader, is the centrepiece of a media and entertainment conglomerate that enjoys immense success.

Kerry added immeasurably to all he touched. Kerry transformed and renewed our sporting codes and traditions, from cricket to football. His television programming interests spanned the globe. And PBL is a major force in new media, as well as its longstanding publishing franchises.

Kerry Packer was a philanthropist whose generosity touched countless Australians.

Kerry was a close and enduring friend of mine for over three decades. I extend heartfelt condolences to Ros, James, Gretel and the entire family."

Mr David Kirk, CEO of Fairfax, said:

"Kerry Packer had our highest respect and admiration for his many achievements. PBL’s television programming and magazines set the standard for the media industry. The company will continue to be a powerhouse in the future, and we at Fairfax look ahead with them to the next generation of growth and success in our industry."
